A general knowledge of human factors is useful in understanding the causes of falls, and in developing countermeasures to reduce falls. Human locomotion has been likened to a "controlled fall", requiring a complex combination of vision, reaction time and balance, taken for granted by all but the disabled. Walking surfaces must be uniform and provide sufficient surface friction to resist foot forces that occur during locomotion.
